Road Marking & White Lining.

Professional road marking and white lining for public and private networks across the UK — keeping routes clear, compliant, and easy to navigate.

C&R delivers professional road marking and white lining for public and private networks across the UK — helping clients keep routes clear, compliant where specified, and easy to navigate, from access roads and service yards to live highways, airports and transport environments.

With over 30 years' experience, our team provides crisp, high-visibility markings that improve safety, manage traffic flow, and support consistent wayfinding. We plan works around site constraints, phasing, and traffic management requirements to minimise disruption and keep critical routes moving.

Every scheme starts with the right approach and the right material. From thermoplastic and MMA to specialist paints, we help you select a system based on surface type, traffic conditions, and performance expectations — backed by practical consultancy when you need it.

Registered to NHSS 7.

C&R is registered to National Highway Sector Scheme 7 — the national standard for laying road markings and road studs on the public highway, including National Highways' strategic road network.

Our expertise

Tailored solutions
for every route.

Whether you're renewing worn markings or delivering a full reline, we apply markings with accuracy and consistency — aligned to your specification and the needs of the environment, from high-traffic networks to private estates and commercial access roads.

Materials & lifespan

The right material for how your route is used.

Markings aren't all the same — the material decides how long they last and what they cost over their life. We specify the option that fits your surface, your traffic, and your budget, and explain the trade-offs before you commit.

Lasts 3–5 years

Hot-applied thermoplastic.

Melted and laid into the surface with reflective glass beads through it, so it bonds hard and stays visible at night. The durable, reflective default for most road and network markings.

Best for Highways, networks, lane lines, and high-traffic road surfaces.

Lasts up to 10 years

MMA cold plastic.

A two-part system that cures by chemical reaction — no heat, sets in minutes, and stands up to the heaviest wear. It reopens quickly, which keeps disruption down on live routes.

Best for Junctions, roundabouts, crossings, and the busiest, highest-wear zones.

Lasts 1–3 years

Line-marking paint.

The lightest, most economical option, applied quickly with the shortest closure. A sensible choice where markings are refreshed more regularly or budgets are tighter.

Best for Lower-traffic access roads, quick refreshes, and budget-conscious schemes.

Compare at a glance

The marking materials, side by side.

There's no single best material — there's a best one for how the route is used. Here's how the common options compare on how quickly they're ready, how long they last, and what they suit. These are typical ranges; the right choice depends on traffic, surface, and weather, which we talk through before we quote.

Material Ready to use Typical lifespan Up-front cost Best for
Hot-applied thermoplastic 5–30 minutes (sets as it cools) Roads 3–5 years · car parks 5–10 years Mid Everyday road lines and markings on busy networks
MMA cold plastic 10–60 minutes (no heat needed) Up to 7–10 years (the most durable) Higher High-stress spots — roundabouts, junctions, crossings and cold-weather jobs
Preformed thermoplastic Near-immediate Long; suits heavy traffic Higher Symbols, arrows, legends and bespoke road graphics
Line-marking paint Showerproof in about an hour 1–3 years Lower Lower-traffic routes and lines that are refreshed more often

FAQs

Answered before
you ask.

The questions procurement, estates and facilities teams ask us most often.

Which marking material is best for a road?
There isn't a single best material — there's a best material for the job. Thermoplastic is the durable, reflective choice for most road surfaces and networks. MMA cures quickly without heat and stands up to the heaviest wear, which makes it well suited to junctions, roundabouts and crossings. Paint is the lightest, most economical option where markings are refreshed more often. We talk this through before we quote.
Can you mark a road while it's still in use?
In most cases, yes. We plan works around your programme and can phase them with the right traffic management so the route keeps moving. Fast-curing materials let us reopen lanes quickly, which keeps disruption to a minimum on live roads and networks.
Do your road markings meet UK standards?
Yes. We apply markings to your specification and to the recognised UK safety standards and local authority requirements that apply to your scheme. If you're not sure what's required for your type of road or site, we're happy to advise on the right approach.
How long do road markings last?
It depends on the material, the traffic the surface takes, and how well the area was prepared. As a general guide, standard line-marking paint lasts around one to three years, hot-applied thermoplastic typically lasts three to five years on roads (longer on lighter-trafficked routes), and MMA cold-plastic systems can last close to a decade in high-wear areas. We recommend the right material for the route and how it's used.
Do you remove old or incorrect lines first?
Yes. Good preparation is what makes markings last. We clean and, where needed, mechanically prepare the surface — including shot blasting to remove old lines and key the surface — so the new markings bond properly and stay crisp for longer.
Can you add anti-skid or coloured surfacing?
Yes. Alongside lining, we install anti-skid (high-friction) surfacing for extra grip at junctions, crossings and high-risk approaches, and coloured surfacing to highlight lanes or zones. We advise on the right system for the surface, the traffic and the level of grip you need.
