Marking out a cycle lane involves far more than a white line, because the type of line, the cycle symbols, the width of the lane and the use of colour are all either prescribed in law or governed by national design guidance, and each one changes how the lane is read by the people using it.
Faded or badly chosen cycle markings do not simply look untidy. They leave drivers unsure whether they are allowed into the lane and cyclists unsure whether they are expected to be in it, at a point on the road where that ambiguity matters most.
"So what actually goes into marking out a cycle lane?"
More than most people expect. On the public highway the markings themselves are prescribed, the geometry sits under national guidance, and the work falls within the sector scheme for road marking. On private land you have considerably more freedom, but following the same conventions is usually the sensible route, because everyone using your site has already learnt what those markings mean on the road outside.
Mandatory and advisory lanes.
The single most important decision is which of the two lane types you are laying, because the line you use tells drivers something different in each case.
- A continuous white line marks a mandatory cycle lane (to TSRGD diagram 1049, laid 150mm wide). Other traffic is not permitted to enter the lane while it is in operation.
- A broken white line marks an advisory cycle lane (to diagram 1004). It indicates that drivers should keep out of the lane where practicable, but it does not prohibit them from entering it.
That distinction is often lost once the work reaches site, and it is worth confirming which type has been specified before anything is laid, along with any waiting or loading restrictions, which are handled separately by the highway authority through its own orders rather than by the lane marking itself.
The cycle symbol, and where it goes.
The cycle symbol (diagram 1057) is what makes a lane legible along its length rather than only at the point where it starts. The convention is to place a symbol at the beginning of the lane, repeat it after every break in the lane such as a side road or junction, and repeat it again at suitable intervals along long uninterrupted runs.
Symbol size is chosen for the width available and the conspicuity needed, with the largest version at 1700mm normally reserved for use with an advanced stop line. Getting the repetition right matters more than most people assume, because a lane that is clearly marked at its start and then unmarked for two hundred metres past three side roads stops reading as a cycle lane at exactly the points where drivers are turning across it.
Advanced stop lines.
An advanced stop line at a signalised junction gives cyclists a reservoir ahead of queuing traffic, formed by two stop lines with a marked area between them, usually reached by a short feeder lane.
The depth of that reservoir is typically between 4 and 5 metres. A shallower reservoir leaves cyclists uncomfortably close to the vehicles queuing behind them, and a deeper one tends to invite drivers to creep into it, so the dimension is worth holding to rather than adjusting to suit the existing stop line.
Where colour comes in.
Coloured surfacing is not a legal requirement for cycle lanes or tracks, and it is worth being clear about that before it is specified. Used well, colour draws attention to the points where cycles and vehicles are most likely to conflict, which is where the benefit sits. Used continuously along an entire route it becomes visually ordinary and loses much of the effect it was chosen for.
- Keep it to conflict points such as junctions, side road crossings and lane transitions, unless there is a specific safety reason to extend it.
- Use one colour consistently across a highway authority area, so the meaning is not relearned street by street.
- Check the skid resistance of whatever material is used, because a coloured surface sits exactly where cyclists brake and turn.
- Budget for maintaining it. Coloured surfacing carries a higher maintenance cost over its life than a plain marked lane, and a worn or patchy colour reads worse than none at all.
Width and layout come before the paint.
National cycle infrastructure design guidance (LTN 1/20) sets a desirable minimum width of 2.0 metres for a cycle lane, with 1.5 metres treated as an absolute minimum in constrained locations.
This is the point at which we will usually say something the client does not necessarily want to hear. Where the carriageway simply does not have the width, marking out a narrow lane against fast-moving traffic can leave cyclists worse positioned than no lane at all, and no amount of quality in the marking will correct a layout that does not work. It is far better to resolve the geometry, or to consider a different form of provision, before anyone specifies materials.
Materials and surface preparation.
The material is chosen for the surface, the traffic and how long the marking has to last.
- Thermoplastic is the usual choice for lane lines and symbols on the highway, with preformed thermoplastic used for cycle symbols and legends because it gives a consistent shape every time.
- MMA is used where a fast cure, a demanding substrate or coloured surfacing calls for it, and on concrete where adhesion is the deciding factor.
- Paint has a place for temporary schemes, trials and short-life markings, where it is the right answer rather than the cheap one.
Whichever is used, surface preparation governs the result. The surface has to be clean, sound and dry, and any previous markings need removing properly rather than being overmarked, or the old lines will ghost through and give cyclists and drivers two conflicting messages on the same stretch of road.
Cycle routes and cycle parking on private sites.
A growing share of this work is not on the highway at all. Hospital sites, university and college campuses, business parks and distribution centres are all marking routes for cycles through spaces that were laid out around vehicles.
The regulations that prescribe highway markings do not apply on private land, so you have more latitude in what you lay, but the conventions are still worth following closely. A few things tend to matter most:
- Mark the route continuously from the site entrance to the cycle shelter, rather than only where it is convenient, so the route is obvious to someone arriving for the first time.
- Mark cycle parking bays properly, in the same way you would mark vehicle bays, so the stands are used as intended and the area is not gradually taken over for storage.
- Treat the points where a cycle route crosses an HGV or delivery route as the priority for both marking and any coloured surfacing, because that is where the risk concentrates.
- Keep cycle routes clear of yard turning circles and reversing areas entirely, rather than marking a route through them.
Working on the public highway.
Cycle lane work on the public highway is road marking on the network, with everything that comes with it. C&R is registered for public-highway road marking under National Highways Sector Scheme 7, and the work is planned with the appropriate traffic management, method statements and risk assessments, and carried out at night or outside peak hours where the road demands it.
On private sites the same discipline applies to a different constraint, which is usually keeping the site operating while the work is phased around deliveries, shift changes or visitor traffic.
Conclusion.
So how are cycle lanes marked out?
Carefully, and with more decisions behind them than the finished line suggests. The line type establishes what drivers are permitted to do, the symbols keep the lane legible past every junction, the reservoir at an advanced stop line has a dimension worth respecting, colour earns its place at conflict points rather than along the whole route, and the width of the lane determines whether any of it helps.
Get those right and the markings do their job quietly for years. Get them wrong and you have spent the budget on something that leaves everybody guessing.
